The majority of Carvins Cove Reservoir is geographicaly in Botetourt County with a small part including the dam in Roanoke County. The 800 acre reservoir and the land below the 1,200 foot contour is owned by the Western Virginia Water Authority, it is one of the primary water supplies for the area. It stores 6.5 billion gallons at full pond. Land in the water shed and above the 1,200 foot contour is owned by the City of Roanoke, the 12,700 acres is called the Carvins Cove Natural Reserve.
